How to Meditate and Why

Following are the basics of a meditation practice to enhance mindfulness in daily life. Of course a group class or private class at Freedom Meditation is the best way to get started.

POSTURE, BREATH and FOCUS

Discovering tranquility amidst the chaos of our minds is the essence of meditation. Amidst the cacophony of thoughts, memories, and projections, meditation offers a sanctuary of stillness. With an upright posture as our anchor, we embark on a journey of inner exploration, guided by the rhythmic dance of our breath.

Seated comfortably, we embrace balance and grounding, allowing the energy within us to flow freely. Whether on a cushion or in a chair, we find our posture—spine erect, shoulders relaxed, hands gently resting on our thighs. Like a puppeteer guiding our movements, we imagine a string pulling us upright, aligning body and mind.

With a soft gaze and half-closed eyelids, we turn our attention inward, away from the distractions of the senses. Our breath becomes our compass, leading us back to the present moment with each inhale and exhale. Through the simple act of breathing, we reconnect with the essence of being alive, rooted in the here and now.

As we immerse ourselves in the rhythm of our breath, we cultivate a sense of calm amidst the turbulence of our thoughts. Focusing on each cycle of breath, we anchor ourselves in the present, gently guiding our wandering minds back to center. When distractions arise, we acknowledge them without judgment, gently guiding our focus back to the gentle rise and fall of our breath.

In this practice of mindful awareness, we synchronize body and mind, aligning ourselves with the natural rhythm of the universe. With each breath, we journey deeper into ourselves, navigating the currents of our thoughts with grace and acceptance. Like a river flowing steadily towards the sea, our minds gradually find peace amidst the ebb and flow of life.

Though the journey may be challenging at first, with patience and persistence, the rushing waterfall of thoughts transforms into a tranquil stream, flowing gently towards the vast expanse of the ocean within. In the stillness of meditation, we find refuge, a sanctuary of peace amidst the chaos of the mind.

WHY MEDITATE

The allure of meditation lies in its promise to unveil the innate tranquility and clarity of our minds. Rooted in the belief that calmness is our natural state, meditation offers a pathway to rediscover this inner peace amidst the chaos of our thoughts.

At its core, meditation invites us to slow down and observe the workings of our minds. Through this introspective journey, we gain insights into our habitual patterns of thought and emotion. We realize that our state of being—whether engulfed in anger, desire, or jealousy—is a reflection of where our mind dwells. Yet, we also come to recognize our capacity to choose, to abide peacefully amidst the tumultuous currents of our thoughts.

Like taming a wild horse, meditation is a practice of training the unruly nature of our minds. Through the gentle discipline of shamatha meditation, we learn to peacefully abide in the present moment, anchored by the rhythmic flow of our breath. With each return to the breath, we reclaim our reins, guiding the wandering mind back to its natural state of stillness.

The untrained mind, like a fragile creature confined to its comfort zone, reacts with rigidity when faced with challenges. In contrast, the trained mind emerges as a resilient and adaptable force, capable of navigating life’s complexities with grace and clarity. Through meditation, we cultivate a mind that is both strong and supple, ready to confront the ebb and flow of existence with resilience and wisdom.

Ultimately, the journey of meditation is a profound exploration of self-discovery and transformation. As we harness the power of our minds, we unlock a reservoir of potential that extends beyond the confines of our meditation cushion, infusing every aspect of our lives with purpose and vitality.
